Hastings, St Leonards & Rother
Coastal Currents 2009 focused on contemporary visual arts with the theme ‘hidden Hastings’: revealing the complex layers of creativity in this vibrant and increasingly culturally rich corner of the South East.
There were a wide range of events and activities to appeal to arts enthusiasts, families and visitors to the area. These included exhibitions; film screenings; open-air theatre productions; art trails; sonic art and live music; storytelling and spoken word evenings; an art car boot sale; book art bibliotherapy and even guerrilla gardening.
In addition, the festival provided a platform for local artists to explore, experiment and critically engage with unused and overlooked locations through a supported public realm and artists’ projects programme. A comprehensive series of talks and education events, led by arts specialists from across the South East, and beyond were free and accessible to attend.
