Studio 21bis (Laurent Lacotte & Romain Demengeot) are based in Paris and work internationally. Following
on from previous projects which explore issues of the French and English littoral, they are realising a
new work for The SPACE. Evoquing the cross-channel migrations of immigrants and their repression,
the intervention re-creates a lighthouse topped by a revolving blue light used by the police. Although the
traditional role of a lighthouse is to provide safe passage to boats, ‘Night Watch’ is transformed into a
surveillance point for tracking and sanctioning.

Studio 21bis’ temporary interventions in the public space are always constructed from recycled cardboard as
the artists consider this material echoes their environmental, cultural and existential concerns.
